Frequently Asked Questions

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help couples and individuals improve emotional connection, resolve interpersonal conflicts, and deepen their relationships. Based on attachment theory, EFT views emotional bonding as an essential factor in building and maintaining healthy, close relationships. In this therapy, individuals or partners create stronger, more secure attachments through dismantling negative cycles of interaction and nurturing vulnerability and trust. EFT encourages a shift from defensive patterns to open, empathetic communication, fostering deeper understanding and connection. The goal is to help clients feel safe, supported, and valued within their relationships, improving overall emotional well-being.

How do I pay?

Before your first session, I will create a profile for you in an online platform called Simple Practice, where I will upload intake forms for you to complete. Within your intake packet, there will be a form asking for a card to keep on file for you. The card on file will be charged following each session.

Do you take insurance?

I do not take insurance. If your insurance provider offers you coverage for our sessions, you will still be responsible for paying for each session in full at the time of appointment, and then I will provide a super bill each month that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. You may call your insurance provider to inquire about reimbursement.

What if I can’t afford your rate? Do you offer a sliding scale?

Yes, I reserve a limited number of sliding scale spots in my schedule. If you do not think you can afford my full fee, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

If I’m unable to offer you a sliding-scale spot, I’d be happy to offer referrals to trusted clinicians in the area. If you’re hoping to find an in-network provider, www.psychologytoday.com is a great resource.

What is your licensure status?

I am a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern (RMHCI) in the state of Florida, license #IMH22935. This means that I have completed my master’s degree, which included 800 hours of face-to-face counseling, and I am working under supervision toward the additional 1500 face-to-face clinical hours required by the state to become a fully independent counselor. If you have any questions regarding my qualifications or other requirements of Registered Mental Health Counselor Interns, please feel free to discuss them with me during your session.

I am supervised weekly by Rebecca Maxwell, LMFT. During this supervision, we go over my cases, and she provides consultation and guidance on best practices. If you do not wish for her to hear the details of our sessions together, please discuss this with me. If you need to reach her to discuss my work, she may be reached at 904-735-8730 or jacksonvillecounseling@gmail.com.

How do I know we’re a good fit?

Before scheduling a therapy session, I do a free 15-minute intro call with all potential new clients. This gives us the chance to get to know each other. Here’s what you can expect:

I’ll ask you why you’re seeking therapy;

I will tell you a bit about myself and my approach as a therapist;

You can ask me any questions that I didn’t cover;

We’ll talk about rates, insurance, availability, etc.

After talking, if it seems like I am not the best fit for you, I will be happy to offer referrals to trusted clinicians in the area based on your needs in counseling.

So we’re a good fit. What next?

If we both decide we're a good fit after our intro call, we'll schedule our first therapy appointment. I will create a profile for you in an online platform called Simple Practice. This will be your “client portal” where you will be able to complete your intake forms. The portal is also where you can view my availability and request/manage your appointments.
